charcoal on paper. 2011. 28” x 20”
This is by far my favorite piece of art I’ve tumblr’d all year. Especially because it is done with charcoal and it is extremely detailed and it looks like it is done with graphite and not charcoal. It just looks perfectly put together and shaded in all the right places to give everything a realistic look and feel considering how the background is done. If I could draw like this I would be amazed with myself, but I am working towards it and I am getting closer and closer.
#15 Raquel Maulwurf
charcoal/pastel on partially scratched mat board. 2008. 34.6” x 80.3”
I think this picture is really amazing. I like this picture because there is so much going on that it just catches your attention. Yet it is solid enough in the right places so that you know what everything is. I’m most attracted to the fireworks over the top of the trees in the background because it is what makes the picture pop, and the solid black objects just brings it all together.
#14 Christina Pancini
Mixed technique on paper. 2011. 11.8” x 9.4”
I was drawn to this picture because of its amazingly realistic look. Christina really captures every element of the character in the piece of work. She captured the detail in the hands and face very well, along with what it seems to be the ruggedness of the exterior clothing, even the roughness in the skin is shown. I was amazed by this piece of work because I am probably going to be a cartoonist and the skills she’s shown here would be quite useful for me to pick up in the near future in my art work.
#13 Reto & Markus Huber
water colors on paper. 2007. 9” x 12”
I really like this picture because it out of the ordinary but very interesting. It is interesting because obviously zebras aren’t really pink and neither are people. Although I like this painting because it shows the softer side of nature and how sensual animals can be. It also gives off the feeling that the two in this picture are bonding and they have a close relationship with each other. And lastly I like this picture because it is simple but detailed enough to where you know what everything is in the photograph.
#12 Charlotte Schulz
Charcoal on paper. 2005. 22”x 28”
This drawing grabbed my attention because of the shadow usage and darkness in some areas. I was also drawn to this piece of work because of the definition of the clouds is really nice, and to be done with charcoal makes it even more interesting. Another interesting aspect of this drawing is how the artist used the placement of lighting so she could make the shadowed items pop with the thickness of the black.

Pen & ink. 2006. 5”x 8” Sorry about the photo.
I chose this piece of art because I found it interesting that it was all done by pen. I’ve never drawn with pen before but I’m guessing it’s really difficult considering that you can not erase. So I admire this artists work because it takes a lot of concentration and skill not to make one mistake. Plus, on top of that the work is nicely detailed and I like the way the buildings fade into the background/center of the paper and at the center there is a focal point which looks down upon the whole city. Truly a nice piece of work.
#10 Justin Gibbens
Water color, graphite, gouache, ink, oolong tea on paper. 2008. 40” x 26”
I like this piece of work because it is nicely defined with color and realism in the animal in the picture. I also like this piece of work because the background seems to have no feeling and all the focus is on the animal and the ground setting. I also like this photo because it combines all different kinds of materials to create one beautiful art piece.
#9 Arden Bendler Browning
Flashe and acrylic gouache on Tyvek. 2011. 114” x 156”
I don’t know why it wouldn’t let me upload the picture. But this work of art interests me because there are so many different things going on, but they are combined in a way where they flow and it makes sense. This also interests me because it is made by water colors and that takes extreme skill to place and position everything where it needs to go without messing up the whole picture. I also like this picture because it is floating in space by itself and it gives off the look of being fast pased and busy.
